Dave Chappelle describes the first time he met Kanye West — with Talib Kweli and Common — and how they all knew he would be famous someday.

Kanye West is one of the greatest artists to ever enter the world of music, but there was a time that he was unknown to most. Dave Chappelle describes such a time when he first met Kanye, along with Common and Talib Kweli.

A couple of years ago, Dave Chappelle appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, just months after the talk show premiered. On the show in 2014, Chappelle was promoting his return to Radio City Music Hall, where he hadn’t performed in almost 11 years. He performed for 10 nights.

Among the topics talked about with Jimmy Fallon were the first time he met Kanye, as well as the first time he met The Roots (they were Fallon’s band on the show).

The story he tells about Kanye West is exactly what you would expect from Yeezy, but the surprising part is that it was before anyone really knew who Kanye was.

If you want to skip to the Kanye part, go to the 4:00 mark. Leading up to that, Fallon and Chappelle talk about his return to New York, The Roots and a Prince reference. The video is below:

That video, which was a part of Season 2, Episode 7 of Chappelle’s Show, aired on March 3, 2004 — less than a month after Kanye dropped his first studio album The College Dropout. That album would end up being his best-selling album to date with over 3.4 million copies sold.

It has also been dubbed the greatest album of all time by Time and Rolling Stone.

Since then, Yeezy has made seven other studio albums — all of which have gone platinum. His most recent album, The Life of Pablo, just went Platinum about a month ago.

Kanye continues to have success in all of his ventures, whether it be music, fashion or just being Kanye West.

I mean, what can you say, his life is dope and he does dope s**t.
