Lizzo’s tiny purse, Lil Nas X looking like a snack, Taylor Swift winning the most awards in AMA history – just a few of the best moments at this year’s American Music Awards.

The AMA’s first began in 1973 when Dick Clark wanted to compete with the Grammy’s after the move of that year’s show to Nashville, Tennessee. Since then, it has become one of the most televised award shows in the world.

Sunday night’s show included Ciara as host, Selena Gomez as the opening act and some really memorable moments. Billie Eilish made her award show debut, performing music off her newest album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

One of the top performances of the night was Halsey’s performance of her latest single ‘Graveyard’. The performance included friend, and professional dancer Jade Chynoweth both wearing all white sports bras, jeans and a jacket.

The two danced on a white pop-up stage while splattering paint on themselves. Many fans are suspecting this is about past trauma in relationships since the song is about ex-boyfriend G-Eazy after cheating during his tour overseas this past summer.

Rising star Lizzo debuted her latest song off her latest album Cuz I Love You, “Jerome”, in a pink ruffle dress during the show. She performed while on a spinning stage, wearing no shoes and shaking the show with her amazing vocals. The entire theatre could be seen with their cell-phone lights all around the singer while performing, mimicking a sky full of stars. Lizzo has delivered in the vocals department this past year, and this performance is no different.

Billie Eilish brought her edgy, bad-ass, gritty energy to the stage this year, during her debut award show performance. Sticking true to her aesthetic, she wore an over-sized black tee with matching shorts and sang her hit song, “All Good Girls Go To Hell”. Behind her were flames throughout the stage and a very personable stare-down with the camera.  Billie took her first two AMA’s home that night, winning new artist and favourite alternative artist.

Taylor Swift took the stage multiple times over the evening. Performing a medley of all her biggest hits including “Trouble”, “The Man”, and “Love Story”, truly proving why she’s the artist of the decade. She opened her performance with a hard chorus from “The Man” and continued throughout the performance with special duets with friends, Halsey and Camilla Cabello, who joined Swift on her ‘Reputation’ Stadium Tour in 2018.

At the end of her performance, Taylor thanked mentor and friend Carole King with an inspiring, heartfelt “thank you” speech. Including Artist of the Decade, Taylor took home a total of six awards that night including Artist of the Year, and Favorite Pop/Rock Album for ‘Lover’, her latest record.

Taylor now holds the record for most AMAs in the show’s history. Before Sunday, Michael Jackson held the record for most awards at 24, Taylor now surpassed that with 29. She now has the most AMAs out of any female artist in AMA history.

This year’s award show was anything but boring, and I can’t wait to see what next year has in store. To view, all of this year’s AMA wins, visit here.
