Meghan Markle planning to break major royal rule: Royals aren’t happy
By Cody Schultz
Should Meghan Markle follow through with voting in the 2020 election, Meghan will break a major royal protocol and the royals are not happy about it.
It goes without saying that Meghan Markle has always marched to the beat of her own drum, which is one of the many attributes that makes her such an incredible activist and leader. Unfortunately, it’s also what has often gotten her in hot water with the royal family on a number of occasions.
While some of Meghan’s previous deviations from royal protocol have been more easily overlooked, her plans to vote in the upcoming US presidential election could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Rulebreaker Meghan Markle to violate royal protocol by voting in US Election
As Meghan has made clear, she is intent on using her right as a US citizen to vote in the November election — and we even have a clear idea of who she’ll be voting for. While under normal circumstances, a celebrity voting in an election is nothing new, Meghan is not your average celebrity.
While Meghan has stepped away from her royal duties, she is still technically considered to be part of the royal family and has retained her title as Duchess of Sussex. As part of their agreement in stepping away, Meghan and Harry also agreed to uphold certain values of the monarchy which is where the issue of Meghan voting in the election comes into play.

Although it is well within Meghan’s right to vote in the election as a US citizen, members of the British monarchy are expected to remain neutral when it comes to political matters. As a result, members of the royal family voluntarily refrain from voting in elections. In fact, the UK government site notes that “Although not prohibited by law, it is considered unconstitutional for the Monarch to vote in an election.”
By voting in the US election this November, Meghan would essentially break protocol and the royal family has made it very clear they’re not happy with the decision.
“The feeling is it’s a violation of the agreement,” a royal aide is reported to have revealed in speaking with The Sun Times after Harry and Meghan made comments viewed to be against current US President Donald Trump.
Said comments left the royal family feeling embarrassed and the fact that Meghan plans on voting in the election has the couple skating on thin ice.
