These days, almost everyone on social media knows Kylie Jenner’s face, name, and brand. But there’s more to the mega famous 23-year-old entrepreneur than her public persona. And even though the reality-star-turned-influencer-turned-makeup-mogul is extremely recognizable, that doesn’t necessarily mean the masses truly know her.

Apparently that’s the way Kylie planned it, but she now claims she doesn’t necessarily love it. And with that admission, we’re getting to know Forbes (former) youngest self-made billionaire a little better.

Why was Kylie Jenner hiding her personality?

According to BuzzFeed, King Kylie recently admitted that she “feels sad” about having to “hide her personality” on social media.

As we’ve learned all too well by now, influencers with such a massive following often receive massive backlash for even the smallest things. And as the youngest sibling of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kylie’s every move remains under a not-always-flattering microscope and so, she explained, she’s made adjustments to her public persona.

In a new video with friend and influencer James Charles, Kylie admitted to the world that it hasn’t been so easy becoming mega famous at such a young age. In a candid clip, Kylie revealed, “When people used to say mean things about what I love the most about myself, it would hurt me more than almost playing a character.”

Kylie went on to explain how she gradually concealed herself as she got “bigger and bigger,” revealing that she finally realized the toll “being herself” on social media had unexpectedly taken on her self esteem and self worth.

Ultimately, Jenner said she had no choice but to go into personality hiding. You can watch their full video below.

The Life of Kylie star also admitted to Charles that she’s especially touched when people see who she really is and still have nothing but nice things to say to her. Apparently, those compliments are even more appreciated when they relate to the aspects of her personality not usually shared with the masses, especially the little things Kylie really loves about herself, like her sense of humor, for one.

Kylie added, “Even for you to say, ‘You’re always so funny.’ …That’s a bigger compliment to me than if you already knew. I don’t know, it’s something sacred.”

That much, at the very least, is pretty relatable.
