Happy Friday, everyone! We come bearing great news for fans of pop legend Britney Spears. As reported by The New York Times, it’s been decided that the conservatorship the 39-year-old star has been under for over 13 years is officially coming to an end. This is fantastic!
During a hearing that took place in Los Angeles on Friday, Nov. 12, Judge Brenda Penny stated that the conservatorship is no longer needed, thus ending it, effective today. The judge reportedly said regarding the state of Spears: “The conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is no longer required.”
Fans of the singer know how terrible the conservatorship has been on Spears’ life, and they’ve been fighting for her freedom for years through the #FreeBritney movement. The situation was really exposed in the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears, which hit Hulu in February 2021. Throughout this year, we finally saw substantial progress on the case.
Spears’ father Jamie Spears was the one blamed for the conservatorship, as he ordered the court to grant him a temporary guardianship back in 2008. Of course, this was anything but temporary. However, in a social media post shared earlier this month, Spears blamed her mom, Lynne Spears, for putting the idea into her father’s head.
In June 2021, Spears spoke out in court against the conservatorship, expressing that she wanted freedom. She shared that she wasn’t allowed to get married or have another baby, among other instances of unfair treatment.
Good news started to pour in after Spears spoke out, including her engagement to longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari. The two seemed ecstatic to share the happy news on social media back in September.
Spears took to Instagram this afternoon to seemingly celebrate the news about the end of her conservatorship, writing: “Freedom is around the corner my queen.” We’re sure she’ll post more soon!
We’re so happy to hear Britney Spears is officially free, and we cannot wait to see her thrive in this next chapter!
