If you were a teenager/young adult, or even around in the late 1990s to the late 2010s, chances are that you may have heard of Britney Spears or at least heard some of her tracks popping up everywhere. Whether it be on MTV's vote-n video show, TRL, the radio, the malls, or even from another peer, the Princess of Pop was everywhere. And her video outfits, concerts, and stage performances (and outfits) were the Chef's Kiss.
In between the recording, Britney released a perfume line, Barbie-styled dolls, endorsed products (Pepsi!), and even curated a clothing line for the fashion brand, Candies. The efforts only amped her fame and with the merchandise, she became the face of the companies.
Britney dropped nine studio albums during her musical tenure, along with remixes, collections, special editions, and tracks. Each one is a reflection of a different lifestyle moment and highlights its unique aspects. Her last album, Glory, was released in 2016, with a reissue in 2020. As part of the reissue, Britney collaborated with the Backstreet Boys on the track, "Matches."
But we're not going to be talking about Glory, or the seven other albums Britney created. We're going to dive into her second album, Oops, I Did It Again. This masterpiece placed one of our favorite singers on the music map and made her a sensation. It's been a little over 25 years since Oops' release in May 2000, but even after a quarter of a century, the music is still with us.
Britney Spears knew her power with Oops, I Did It Again
Britney's 1998 debut album, Baby One More Time, propelled her into the spotlight. At the tender and innocent age of sixteen, she was naive, yet she connected well with young people and left an influence that's still felt today.
Leap to a year and a half later, and Britney's career only skyrocketed with Oops, I Did It Again. The album is her second one and first as a new adult, as the Grammy winner recently turned eighteen in December 1999. Oops was a semi-autobiography of Britney's life at that point. The record was filled with catchy tracks like "Lucky," "Stronger," and, of course, "Oops, I Did It Again," all of which helped create the ultimate Y2K party.
With Oops, Britney was maturing to a more adult sound and themes. It still carried the projection of Baby, One More Time, but with a punch and dominance. And it became one of the bestselling records of the 21st century.
Speaking of which, I hear that there's a special Vinyl set of Oops, in honor of its 25th anniversary. It entails a photograph album and two records. It comes in the color choices of black and pink, priced at $99.98, and should be a must for any Britney fan.
While Britney has no plans to return to the music industry, or at least produce and release a new album anytime soon, we can still enjoy Oops, I Did It Again and all the others that made her a legend.
