In a move that has caught the attention of both fans and legal experts, Kim Kardashian, along with her mother Kris Jenner, has officially filed a defamation lawsuit against Ray J. This marks the first time either of them has taken legal action of this kind against the singer, signaling just how serious the allegations are.

According to People, the drama started with two moments that Kim and Kris could no longer ignore. Per the family's attorney, Alex Spiro, the lawsuit prompted by his clients is the first one that they've issued.

“Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian have never brought a defamation claim before nor have they been distracted by noise - but this false and serious allegation left no choice,” Spiro said to the publisher via press statement.

In the TMZ Presents: The United States vs. Sean “Diddy” Combs documentary (which aired on Tubi), Ray J casually implied that if the Kardashians were being charged with racketeering, he wouldn’t be surprised.

Then it escalated — during a September 24 livestream, Ray J said,

“The federal RICO I’m about to drop on Kris and Kim is about to be crazy... The feds is coming... It’s worse than Diddy.”

The lawsuit centers around public claims Ray J recently made, suggesting that both Kim and Kris are under federal investigation for racketeering—something the Kardashian-Jenner family insists is completely untrue. They argue that these statements were not only false, but also made recklessly, with no attempt to verify the facts. According to the legal documents, the comments have caused significant harm to their reputations and personal brands, both of which are closely tied to their massive business empires.

What sparked the Ray J lawsuit?

The legal action stems from two separate incidents involving Ray J. In one, he appeared in a documentary and implied that if the Kardashians were involved in criminal activity, he wouldn’t be surprised. In another, more recent livestream, he outright claimed that a federal investigation into the family was underway. For Kim and Kris, these weren’t just offhand remarks—they were seen as damaging attacks made in front of large audiences.

In their lawsuit, they argue that Ray J’s comments go far beyond opinion or speculation. Instead, they claim he is spreading dangerous falsehoods with the intent to harm their image. They are asking the court to award both compensatory and punitive damages, though the exact figures haven’t been disclosed. Legal experts say that for public figures like the Kardashians, winning a defamation case can be difficult, but not impossible—especially if they can prove the statements were made with reckless disregard for the truth.

A new chapter in an old feud

This lawsuit adds another layer to the already complicated history between Kim Kardashian and Ray J. Their relationship, once romantic, turned into a media firestorm after the release of their infamous sex tape years ago. Since then, both parties have gone their separate ways—Kim building a billion-dollar brand and Ray J continuing his music and business ventures—but the tension has clearly never faded.

Now, with legal action underway, the question is whether this chapter will finally put an end to the long-running drama or only escalate it further. Either way, it’s clear that Kim and Kris are no longer staying silent.
