Britney Spears closed the legal end of her conservatorship on April 26th and rightfully cheered the milestone with a glass of red wine! For the pop artist, the day came nearly three years (November 2021) after the California Courts terminated the conservatorship that left Britney entrapped for thirteen years.
Britney and Jamie agreed to settle a dispute due to legal fees on April 25th, which resulted in court appearances, attorneys, and other expenses from Britney's conservatorship dissolution. The settlement was the final nail in the coffin, as it granted Britney complete independence, allowing her to live as she pleases.
The court-ordered conservatorship was placed by Britney's father, Jamie Spears, in 2008 following the former's public meltdown. The documents gave Britney's father all of his daughter's financial earnings, whether from performances, record sales, endorsements, or other business deals. While the conservatorship was initially intended to keep Britney safe, it instead left her psychological scars. Per her bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me, the singer reflected that conservatorship made her feel like a "child robot" and not at all like a woman.
Other major bombshells included her detailed relationship with N*SYNC'S Justin Timberlake, her career, and the family strain placed by the conservatorship.
Britney's lawyer, Mathew Rosenberg, who handled all of her legal affairs since 2021, opened up regarding his client following the settlement on Friday.
"Although the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, [Britney's] wish for freedom is truly complete. As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with the court or [be] entangled with legal proceedings in this matter. Britney Spears won when the court suspended her father, and Britney won when her fundamental rights and civil liberties were restored."
After her conservatorship's ending, Britney briefly returned to curating music. She collaborated with the legendary Elton John for the song "Hold Me Closer" in 2022 and with Will.i.am with "Mind Your Business" in 2023.
How Britney Spears celebrated the end of her legal conservatorship
Britney took to Instagram on Friday and celebrated the momentous occasion with wine! Her choice? Per her IG photo, the singer chose Norton Reserva, which was bottled in 2019. It's her first real glass of an alcoholic drink, as her conservatorship forbade her to consume liquor.
In the caption, Britney share that love will only make your life better.
"Eventually, you will come to understand that love heals everything, and that is all there is . . . and REAL wine feels extremely nice as well."
