What we know about Kim Kardashian's journey on becoming a lawyer
By Ashley Gale
Kim Kardashian has been on a mission to become a lawyer since 2018 - and has been very successful so far.
In April 2019, she first revealed she registered with the California State Bar to study law and had help from top lawyers.
"First year of law school you have to cover three subjects: criminal law, torts, and contracts," she told Vogue, "To me, torts is the most confusing, contracts the most boring, and crim law I can do in my sleep. Took my first test, I got a 100. Super easy for me. The reading is what really gets me. It’s so time-consuming. The concepts I grasp in two seconds."
While speaking with the magazine, she expressed that she wanted to take the Bar Exam in 2022. However, if she wanted to continue her dream of becoming a lawyer, she would first have to pass the California Baby Bar exam. This exam is given to first-year students.
Changing the world
Kim wants to focus on criminal justice reform and advocate for wrongfully convicted people.
In 2018, the Skims mogul went to the White House to persuade then-President Donald Trump to free Alice Marie Johnson, who was sent to prison in 1997 for a non-violent drug crime. Alice was also sentenced to prison for life without parole. She has also helped and spoken out for several others who have faced long prison sentences for non-violent crimes.
In her Vogue interview, Kim revealed why she wanted to become a lawyer, "I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society. I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more."
Kim's first attempt at the California Baby Bar Exam
Unfortunately, in 2020, Kim failed her first Baby Bar Exam attempt and confirmed the news on her family's past reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians. She received a 474 when the passing grade was 560.
"If you do law school the way I'm doing it, it's a four-year program instead of your typical three-year program," Kim said. She went on to explain how the Baby Bar exam works. "This one is harder, I hear, than the official bar."
She continued, "I spent six weeks straight 10-12 hours a day studying and it was so important for me to take this and to not pass gets your spirit down. It makes you want to give up.
Kim's second attempt
It didn't take Kim long to sign up to take the Baby Bar Exam again.
In November 2020, Kim took the exam while she contracted Covid-19. While preparing for her huge exam, she planned on studying 12 hours per day but could not get out of bed and had a 104-degree fever.
Kim later revealed to fans on her Instagram Story that she had failed for the second time as she scored a 463.
"Unfortunately I haven’t passed yet but I’m not giving up and I’m preparing to take it again soon," she commented.
Her third attempt
In the summer of 2021, Kim revealed on Kristen Bell and Monica Padman's podcast "We Are Supported By…" that she took the test for the third time.
"I think I did well. So if I don’t pass, I am going to be so pissed, you have no idea," the reality star exclaimed.
Unfortunately, Kim confirmed that she did not pass the exam.
Fourth time's a charm
After failing three times, Kim finally passed the California Baby Bar Exam.
In an emotional and lengthy post on Instagram, the Skims founder shared a few photos of herself wearing a beautiful blue dress.
She wrote, "Omg! I passed the baby bar exam! Looking in the mirror, I am really proud of the woman looking back today in the reflection. For anyone who doesn’t know my law school journey, know this wasn’t easy or handed to me."
Kim continued, "I failed this exam 3 times in 2 years, but I got back up each time and studied harder and tried again until I did it!!! (I did have COVID on the 3rd try w a 104 fever but I’m not making excuses). In California, the way I’m studying law you need to take 2 bar exams, this was just the first one but with the harder pass rate. I was told by top lawyers that this was a close to impossible journey and harder than the traditional law school route but it was my only option and it feels so so sooooo good to be here and on my way to achieving my goals."
The TV personality gave special shoutouts to all the lawyers that helped her along the way. She also revealed her grueling study schedule that included 10 hour study sessions, four-hour Zoom calls, and in-person practice tests each week.
"I know my dad would be so proud and he would actually be so shocked to know that this is my path now but he would have been my best study partner. I am told he was notorious for making fun of people who didn’t pass on their first attempt like he did, but he would have been my biggest cheerleader," Kim exclaimed, talking about her father, Robert Kardashian Sr.
She concluded, "Bottom line is don’t ever give up even when you are holding on by a thread, you can do it!!!!! Set your mind to it and get it done because it feels soooooo good once you get to the other side!"
On an episode of Hulu's The Kardashians, fans got to witness Kim's real-time reaction to her passing. In the scene, she sat in her black SUV with her daughter, North, and friends.
In a confessional, Kim said, "I'm so happy North is here to see this because my kids know that I've taken time away from them to study. To see that I never gave up just makes me so happy that I can show them by example.
As for the official Bar Exam, there has been no word about when Kim will take it.
Heading back to the white house
In April 2023, Kim headed back to the White House to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss criminal justice reform and the advocacy for small business owners with a criminal record.
In an Instagram post, Kim discussed her time in Washington D.C., "Honored to join Vice President Harris, criminal justice advocates and four incredible small business owners who received pardons at the White House Second Chance event! We got to hear the lived experiences of how convictions impact your life from the pardon recipients and discussed the changes the Small Business Administration made to allow people with criminal convictions to take out loans! Much more to do but grateful for progress!"
Studying hard
In an Instagram post shared on November 21, Kim posted a selfie while doing some coursework for law school. The star took a break from her studies and posed for a quick pick while wearing glasses and a tank top.
She simply captioned her post, "Law school."
In the comment section, fans sent positive vibes Kim's way as she continues her journey on becoming a lawyer.
"We believe in you. You can do this. We are cheering you on. Keep going. Don't give up. You got this. Cant wait to see all the good you will do for the world as a lawyer," one person exclaimed.
"Kim is my lawyer," another exclaimed.
