Kanye West gets another Graduation thanks to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Rap’s most famous college dropout received an honorary doctorate of Fine Arts degree from the school on Monday (May 11).
“I’m a pop artist. So my medium is public opinion and the world is my canvas…”
It’s certainly a humbling honor for the 37-year-old rhymer who did briefly attend the American Academy of Art in Chicago before leaving the Windy City to become one of the most polarizing figures in hip-hop.
According to the Chicago Tribune, ‘Ye waited patiently in his black graduation robe and not once did he get up to grab the mic to say something incredibly stupid.
However, when it was time for him to speak, he delivered a brief commencement speech that was a little odd but charming nonetheless. Yeezy began his speech with this statement: “I’m a pop artist. So my medium is public opinion and the world is my canvas.”
West then went on to say that receiving an honorary doctorate from SAIC has now legitimized as an artist.
“This honor is going to make your lives easier, for two reasons: You don’t have to defend me as much! And I’m going to make all of our lives easier,” he said. “When I was giving a lecture at Oxford, I brought up this school, because when I went on a mission to create in other spaces — apparel, film, performance — it would have been easier to have just said I had a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago! Thank you.”
Prior to getting his honorary degree, the “All Day” rapper spoke to SAIC students for about an hour.
