Kanye West Says He Was ‘Grossly Over-Censored’ at 2015 BBMAs

Kanye West is mad as hell and rightfully so. As we previously reported, the Chicago rhymer was heavily censored and mostly unseeable during his performance at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs). On Tuesday (May 19), Kanye issued a statement, via his publicist, addressing his disastrous performance.

The rapper-producer blamed Billboard for the blunder and accused them of excessively censoring him during his set. The statement reads:

"“Kanye West was grossly over-censored at the Billboard Music Awards. Non-profane lyrics such as ‘with my leather black jeans on’ were muted for over 30 second intervals. As a result, his voice and performance were seriously misrepresented.”“It is ridiculous that in 2015, unwarranted censorship is something that artists still have to fight against. Although West was clearly set up to face elements beyond his control during the live broadcast, he would like to apologize to the television audience who were unable to enjoy the performance the way he envisioned.”"

To recap, Kanye closed out the BBMAs with a two-song medley of “All Day” and “Black Skinheads” in front of sparkly pyrotechnics and clouds of smoke. There was so much pyro onstage that it was difficult to see ‘Ye at times.

On top of that, the censors bleeped out every word from his mouth making his performance indecipherable. According to reports, Kanye received a smattering of boos from the audience at the end of his set.

Billboard posted an editorial defending Kanye’s performance. However, the article doesn’t explain why the “Only One” rapper was performing “All Day” in billows of smoke and pyrotechnics. As for the bleeps throughout his performance, the 44 mentions of the N-word most likely scared ABC censors into a panic with the seven-second delay button.

Reps for ABC and Dick Clark Productions had no comment on the matter.
