There’s an old saying that goes “charity begins at home,” and for Kanye West his giving back starts with his beloved hometown of Chicago. The “All Day” rapper recently donated $133,000 to Donda’s House, the education foundation created in honor of his late mother, Dr. Donda West.
According to a press release, it’s the largest donation for the non-profit organization, whose mission is to help educate local youths and inspire them to achieve their goals through music and the arts.
The Chicago-based organization was founded in 2013 by Kanye, Donnie Smith and Rhymefest (real name Che Smith) who helped co-write his Grammy-winning song, “Jesus Walks.”
“I really cannot thank Kanye enough for this incredible contribution,” said Rhymefest. “His leadership has enabled Donda’s House to grow quickly and impact the lives of over 160 of Chicago’s young people already in our short history. This is a great honor and a true tribute to his mother’s legacy, who did so much for young artists.”
Donnie Smith, who is the Executive Director of Donda’s House, concurred with Rhymefest and added, “Kanye’s generosity is greatly appreciated and will improve our capacity with new staff as we deliver the high-quality arts programming that our participants deserve.”
News of Kanye’s monetary donation follows behind his recent gift of an honorary doctorate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
It’s always good to see an artist give back to his local community whether it’s spending time with school kids, donating money or raising awareness for a social cause.
Kanye West is not a bad guy after all.
