Kanye West has collaborated with a number of artists in the rap, R&B and pop worlds. While recording his second album, Late Registration, he teamed up with Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine to record the melodic “Heard ‘Em Say.” During a press conference for the Mawazine Festival in Morocco, Levine gave props to the mercurial rapper and producer.
“Kanye West is a genius,” he stated. “I know with people he causes different reactions in people. Love him or hate, he’s brilliant.”
“He’s a really pure creative person and I really respect that about him and everything with him is very legitimate and very real…” – Adam Levine
The “Animals” singer went on to explain how they collaborated on “Heard ‘Em Say.”
“We were on a flight to the EMAs (MTV’s European Music Awards) in Italy at the time and he was on the same plane and I haven’t met him yet,” he recalls. “He came up to me with his iPod, he was like, ‘Hey, I got the this record do you want to write a song together?” And I say, ‘Yeah, sure.’ And the next thing I knew, we were in the studio making the record. It was that easy.”
“He’s a really pure creative person and I really respect that about him and everything with him is very legitimate and very real,” he added. “I love that dude.”
“Heard ‘Em Say” went on to be a gold-certified single with 500,000 copies sold in the U.S. As for the album, Late Registration, it nabbed a Grammy for Best Rap Album and went platinum (1 million sold).
