Kourtney Kardashian takes the spotlight in our KUWTK Fitness Friday column, with the mom of three praising the ketogenic (keto) low-carb diet.
Kourtney Kardashian just keeps looking more fit and fabulous every year! At 39, the mom of three is dedicated to her diet and fitness plan. And while Kourtney is known for switching it up (gluten-free, dairy-free food and high-intensity workouts, anyone?), Kardashian recently praised the ketogenic (keto) low-carb, high fat diet in particular.
We’ve got the skinny on exactly how the keto diet has helped Kourtney to achieve her fitness goals in this week’s Fitness Friday column.
Kourtney Kardashian explains why keto diet wins
Kardashian described the ketogenic diet as a “really positive experience,” reported People. The weight loss plan, which focuses on cutting carbs, boosting fat intake, and eating moderate amounts of protein, helped Kourtney to achieve her 98-pound figure.
The petite KUWTK star began following a keto diet in 2017. She shared that she planned to return to the food plan because she felt it benefited her body.
Kardashian eliminated carbohydrates such as beans and grains. She increased her intake of protein and vegetables.
Among Kourtney’s favorite foods: Broccoli rice or cauliflower rice topped with chicken or fish. She also enjoyed avocados and salads with homemade dressing.
Registered dietitian describes keto diet goals
Registered dietitian Cynthia Sass noted that the goal in following the keto diet is a state of ketosis. In that state, Kourtney’s body uses fat instead of carbohydrates for fuel.
Kardashian eats approximately 75% to 90% of her calories from fat, 6% to 20% from protein, and 2% to 5% from carbohydrates when she is on the keto diet.
“After three to four days on a ketogenic diet, back-up stores of carbohydrates, called glycogen, become depleted and ketosis kicks in, triggering some weight loss and the appearance of a leaner physique,” clarified Sass.
Kourtney Kardashian tries fasting and apple cider vinegar
In addition to the keto diet, Kourtney used apple cider vinegar, intermittent fasting, and collagen protein powder to help achieve her goals. She checked in with her doctor about her food plan and urges others to follow her lead in consulting a health care professional before starting or changing their diet.
Sass agrees with Kardashian about talking with a doctor before trying a new diet. She also recommended modifying the keto diet to include more carbohydrates.
“In my experience, moderation is generally the key to shedding pounds for good, optimizing health, and living a balanced, enjoyable life,” added Sass.
