Amelia Hamlin defends herself after she’s accused of blackfishing on Instagram
Amelia Hamlin is defending herself after being accused of blackfishing by fans.
The 19-year-old model is getting more attention than ever after confirming her relationship with Scott Disick, including lots of criticism on Instagram. And after her latest post went live, fans were less-than-thrilled with her new, super tan look.
The model has since disabled comments on the post, but the photo is still able to be seen on her account. You can check it out below.
After reading the criticism, Hamlin took to her Instagram Story to blame the extra dark tan on her Italian heritage. “I’m receiving a lot of comments in regards to my latest photo,” she began, according to Page Six. “I am being told that I am ‘black fishing’ – thank you all for educating me on this topic.”
From there, she explained she had recently gone on a vacation which also contributed to her tan. “And with my Italian heritage I tan very easily,” she said.
What is blackfishing?
For those who need a refresher, the term blackfishing refers to an instance when a non-POC purposefully darkens the color of their skin with products such as self-tanner or makeup, in an attempt to look Black. However, Amelia Hamlin insists that simply wasn’t the case this time around.
“There is no self-tanner involved. Or intention of looking darker than my own natural skin color,” she continued. “I had a lot of fun creating this look with no malice intention or offense.”

Amelia Hamlin may have been speaking the truth. After all, she recently traveled to Miami with Disick where they spent plenty of time in the sun. Either way, most of her fans seemed to hear her out, and her follower count only continues to grow with each passing day. Hopefully, she learns from this experience and is careful with what she could be perceived as doing moving forward, if of course she was telling the truth.
