Kendall Jenner reawakens rare 1999 Givenchy gown at the 2024 Met Gala
Kendall Jenner busted open the Givenchy archives to "reawaken" the Alexander McQueen gown to wear at the 2024 Met Gala on May 6th. With its long, sheer sleeves, medieval corseted style, and revealing cutouts, the sparkling black number hasn't been on a human being, not in 1999 when it was created, or ever.
For 25 years, the unique dress has been displayed on a mannequin. Kendall is the first person to slip into the delicate fabric, which impeccably suits her tall and lean frame. Naturally, wearing a piece of this caliber comes with a feeling of confidence and specialness. Kendall revealed to Vogue how the never-been-worn dress created a "moment" for her.
"It's been sleeping for the last 25 years," the supermodel tells the fashion outlet. "It's literally a 'sleeping beauty.' It's such a special moment [and] I feel extremely honored that [Givenchy] is allowing me to wear it."
As the 2024 Met Gala's theme this year was "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," the dress fit the title appropriately. With her dark hair pulled back and hung down freely in loose curls, Kendall looked like a gothic variation of Disney's Princess Aurora.
The gown is an exquisite piece designed by the late designer Alexander McQueen, who tragically passed away in 2010, so it has specific protocols regarding its preservation and lifespan. In other words, it cannot be altered or tailored to fit one's body. Otherwise, it'd be ruined and wasted.
Luckily for Kendall, no alteration had to be done, or damage to the dress. It was like it was made for her. However, she was apprehensive of trying it on as she was afraid that it may not fit and she and her style team would have to come up with another option.
"The big moment of truth was, 'Does it fit me?' And it literally fits me like a glove," Kendall shares.
This year's Met Gala was Kendall's tenth initiation. In 2014, she attended her first one and wore a strapless peach-toned dress by the company TopShop. At only eighteen years old, she owned the Met. Perhaps Kendall picked up some cues from her older sister, Kim Kardashian, at the time?
Kendall Jenner switches it up for the 2024 Met Gala after party
Following the highly-profiled event, Kendall attended the Vogue after party in Tribeca, where many of the attendees socialized. For her look, Kendall swaps her Met Gala 1999 gown for another Givenchy archival piece. She went with a white strapless "angel wing" gown with a high-low hemline and paired it with strappy sandals.
The reality star switched it up again with another white dress for another party. Kendall chose another long-sleeved piece by designer Vivienne Westwood, but the difference lies in the style: it had a corseted waist, a laced bodice, and a mini-skirt. Numerous outlets, including People, have reported that Kendall and her ex-boyfriend, rapper Bad Bunny, had been hanging out at the party. Since he's a member of the Met Gala Chair, bumping into one another and catching up was certain.
The couple called it quits on their relationship in December 2023 after nine months.
