Demi Lovato’s got jokes. The pop star took to the stage at the 2020 People’s Choice Awards to hosts the night’s events, and she wasn’t afraid to insert a little humor into her monologue.

After a whirlwind year, and a broken engagement to Max Ehrich, Lovato cracked a joke about her short-lived romance.

For starters, she let fans know how happy she was to be on stage. “I am so excited to be here tonight because honestly this year has been the longest three years of my life,” the singer said as she reflected on some of her 2020 highlights, as reported by People.

“Don’t get me wrong, it started out amazing. I performed at the Grammys and sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. But then, COVID hit, and everything shut down,” she explained.

“So, I did what everyone else did, I went into lockdown mode, and got engaged,” Demi Lovato jokingly added, going on to share other things she did over the past few months.

“I got into painting, photography, meditation, tested the limits of Postmates Unlimited. Also, I didn’t know this could happen, but reached the end of Instagram four times,” Demi said. “I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert.”

Lovato looked drop dead gorgeous at the award show in a glittering floor-length gown that hugged her curves. The zinger about her failed engagement marked the first time she spoke out about the split publicly.

The singer announced in July that she was engaged to Ehrich, shocking fans seeing as they had only known each other a mere few months. At the time, the couple seemed to be the picture of happiness. Ehrich proposed to Lovato on a Malibu beach, and she gushed about the moment afterwards.

“When I was a little girl, my birth dad always called me his ‘little partner’ something that might’ve sounded strange without his southern cowboy like accent. To me it made perfect sense. And today that word makes perfect sense again but today I’m officially going to be someone else’s partner,” Lovato captioned her engagement announcement.

However, after the pair called their wedding off, Lovato deleted the post. The former couple reportedly made the call in late September, although Lovato never directly addressed the breakup herself (until now).

Cheers to Demi Lovato for finding humor in even some of the darker moments of her life.
