Kim Kardashian is celebrating Amari Thompson's 18th birthday in The Kardashians season 6 episode 9, "We're Going Camping!" Amari is the younger brother of Khloé's ex-boyfriend, Tristan Thompson, who's been diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a condition that causes epileptic seizures and other cognitive disabilities.
While attending the party hosted by Khloé and at Tristan's house, Kim gave the new eighteen-year-old all the attention. She complemented on his style and reflected how she met him. Since then, he became a member of her family.
"I first met Amari almost ten years ago, and he's just, you know, the sweetest."
Khloé and Tristan seem to have equal guardianship of Amari concerning his needs and 24/7 medical care. It can be challenging to look after someone with a disability, as they can't do what they need to do themselves, and it takes an extraordinary person to take on the role of caretaker.
Kris Jenner is proud that her daughter is doing the work of an angel for Amari, as he and Tristan's mother, Andrea Thompson, passed away suddenly in 2023. She was the primary caretaker for her son, but the role has been inherited to Tristan.
"Khloé, is truly is a big part of Amari's life," Kris shares. "And I think it' so incredibly impressive how she takes care of him. She's literally a gift from God, and so is Amari."
Kim Kardashian comforts Chicago that there's no need to be scared on The Kardashians
As the kids gathered round Amari to wish him a happy birthday, Chicago and her friend held back, unsure of what to make of the situation. Being only six years old at the time, it's natural for kids to feel uncertain regarding why some need more help than others or why they are who they are. How a parent explains it to the children can make all the difference.
"Are you girls a little scared" Kim asked gently to her daughter and friend. "There's no need to be, but it's okay if you are."
The SKIMS founder elaborated that the girls's fear is not an offensive one, but more along the lines of Amari will be okay or needs an explanation of his conditions.
"You know, they have lots of questions, and at times, they might not be the most comfortable, but I think it's so important that they play with [Amari] and really get to know him."
For the most part, Kim and Khloé affirm that their children have exposure to Amari, more so than others, and that helps them become more accepting and nurturing for others. This world can be cruel, so having kindness can make it better and less stressful.
"My kids, they're much more exposed to Amari than some of the other kids. So True's more concerned than frightened of Amari, but I do think it's important for our kids and everyone's kid to be exposed to all different types of people," Khloé reveals in her confessional.
A little later, she emphasizes that Amari will never be a problem for her or her family, and that he only made her life better with his soul.
"Amari has never and will never be a burden or anything like that. Amari is one of the most special souls I have ever met."
